Texas’ oldest newspaper the Galveston Daily News reports Galveston is gearing up for a surge in cruise passengers in the coming months as Disney, Princess along with its current resident cruise lines Royal Caribbean and Carnival will be operating cruises from its “wharves”.
GDN reports the governing board of the Port of Galveston approved spending $190,000 to nearly triple the number of seats at the Texas Cruise Ship Terminal from 1,350 to 3,640 and adding more crowd control barriers. The $190,000 appropriation for chairs and barriers is just the initial investment as the Port will eventually apportion up to $12 million for terminal renovation. Also in the works is a new screening area for embarking passengers, additional restrooms and a new gangway.
Carnival’s newest ship, the 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic, will begin 7 day Caribbean cruises out of Galveston on Nov. 14. In addition to the Magic, the 2,758 passenger Carnival Triumph, currently based in New Orleans, will reposition to Galveston on Oct. 6 to sail year-round four- and five-day western Caribbean cruises.
Princess Cruises and Disney Cruise Lines recently announced plans to move ships to Galveston beginning operation in 2012. Princess announced it would send the 3,070 passenger Crown Princess operating a series of 19 seven-night sailings to the Western Caribbean. Disney released that the 1,754 passenger Disney Magic will sail a series of 12 voyages out of Galveston starting in September, 2012. Also sailing out of Galveston this winter is Royal Caribbean’s 3,114 passenger Mariner of the Seas of the taking the place of the 3,114 passenger Voyager of the Seas currently sailing from the island.
Passengers sailing from Galveston should know cruise lines require personal injury lawsuits to be filed in a certain court if they suffer an accident while cruising. Royal Caribbean, Disney and Carnival require cases to be filed in Florida while Princess requires cases to be filed in California.
